The World's Fastest B Motor Slot Car
Part 2 - The Chassis
By Rick Thigpen
The motor needed a few more modifications to fit in the chassis I decided to build for it. That chassis is one built by Lee Gilbert. It was raced to victory by John Stephan on Jan 18, 1970 at the California ARCO. John used a “Green Can” but others in the main used a B-motor.

Note the super shallow motor angle. That’s a lot easier to achieve with a C-can (Green Can) than a big fat B-motor monster. Drastic action was needed to achieve a gear mesh with a .750” diameter 45 tooth Fass spur gear. I had to notch and flare the can, notch the magnet shim and grind a notch in the magnet….YIKES! I epoxied in the magnets, honed them to .525” and painted the whole thing up with black wrinkle paint:
Here’s the motor snuggled into the chassis. The tires are still oversized here but when trimmed to 7/8” will clear the end bell.
Here are some more views of the finished motor:
The chassis is pretty straight forward and clean in the Lee Gilbert style:
Aside from the shallow motor angle the other interesting feature are the split rear pans:
