Revell, just like similar model car companies of its day, embraced the idea of putting a motor in its 1/32 scale static kit cars and racing them on a plastic home track. When commercial 1/24 scale raceways became popular, Revell embraced the idea of putting a motor in its 1/24 scale static kit cars so they could be raced on a commercial track.

When vac-formed bodies replaced injection-molded bodies for commercial 1/24 scale racing, Revell embraced the idea of giving up something it was very good at (making high quality scale injection-molded bodies) and make scale sized vac-formed clear plastic bodies. In fact, before it was over they made more different body styles in vac-formed clear plastic than they did in injection-molded plastic.

When vac-formed body manufacturers and racers got together and began to incrementally re-write the rules abandoning strict scale racing in favor of slot car physics, which included longer-wider-lower bodies, Revell recognized the trend and went back to what it was very good at; making high quality scale injection-molded bodies for static kits. So it goes.
