Dynamic Bodies

Dynamic Models, Inc. originally made model airplane parts, but expanded and got involved in slot racing beginning in 1964 with a line of interchangeable chassis components and hardware bits. Dynamic Models also entered into a joint venture with AMT, become a subsidiary. In 1965 Dynamic was offering at least two injection-molded bodies; a Mustang and a Cobra. Strangely, or maybe not so strangely, so was AMT.

By 1966 Vacuum-forming had pretty much replaced injection-molding for making bodies, and both Dynamic and AMT began offering Ready-to-Run Thingies with Vac-formed bodies. Again it is not surprising how much Dynamic's "Bandit" resembles AMT's "Bandido".

By the end of 1967 AMT was getting out of the slot car business and returning to static models, making it plain that Dynamic did the slot cars.

In 1968, Dynamic began offering a line of vacuum-formed bodies made of thin (.020") Butyrate sized and proportioned for slot racers, not scale slot cars. These bodies were lower, longer, wider and weighed less than their competitors, and so became very popular with hard-core racers and scratch builders.

Dynamic was also making the same body styles out of even thinner Butyrate (.010"), and in late 1969 began making bodies out of Lexan. Rather than create a whole new series of part numbers for the same body style made out of a different material, Dynamic simply added a "1", "2" or "3" to the beginning of the original three digit part number. So, a #525 McLaren M6 Coupe GT body made out of the new thinner .020" Butyrate would now be #1525. For the .010" thick Butyrate, the added number would be "2". For Lexan; a "3". For convenience, the chart above is organized so that the same body styles made in multiple materials are grouped together in the list.

With their savvy management and marketing department, Dynamic eventually went on to become one of the two remaining body manufacturers in the golden era.
